BOARD OF DIRECTORS POSITION DESCRIPTION

Overview

The AIA St. Louis Board of Directors is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the chapter. Principally, the Board conducts the general management of chapter affairs, maintains control of its property, develops policies, authorizes expenditures, and takes necessary steps to fulfill the organization's purposes. The Board also plays a key role in financial oversight, approving the annual budget and strategic framework.  The members of the Board contribute their professional, managerial, educational, financial, and strategic skills to ensure long-term organizational stability, strategic planning, and year-to-year excellence for its membership.

Officer terms are for one year or until a qualifed successor has been identified. Each elected and appointed Director shall serve a term of two years or until a successor has been identified.

Board Member responsibilities include attendance at monthly meetings, board committee meetings, serving as Board liaison to at least one AIA St. Louis committee, attending AIA St. Louis events and Board retreat(s), and active electronic conversations as needed. In some years the Board has held additional meetings.  It is also the expectation that board members are interested and willing to serve in leadership positions (President, Secretary, and/or Treasurer).

Why Serve?

The first reason to serve on a Board of Directors might be "To contribute to something meaningful" but you can also see it as a way "To allow something meaningful to contribute to you."

When you serve on the board, you have the honor, challenge, and responsibility of understanding how everything needs to work together for an organization to accomplish its goals. Other reasons to serve are:

  • Receive a valuable seat behind the wheel of a major organization and play a key role in strategizing. Your voice will be heard - and it has impact. You'll hear the impactful voices of others too, and you'll bring your own valuable talents, passions, and areas of expertise. You'll open eyes and your eyes will be opened.
  • Serving on the board is a powerful way to build your own skills and expertise, as well as develop and grow as a leader, cultivate new skill sets, and expand your network of peers, professionals, community leaders, and community thought leaders.
  • Have the opportunity to learn about working with others as it relates to issues of leadership, finance, and other areas of business which will teach you about diplomacy.

Place yourself at the forefront of the AIA and the profession, advance your career, get networked, and be an agent for change and collaboration with your peers.
