Join us for the Course 3 of the AIA Materials Certificate Program, “Health Impacts: Connecting Building Materials, Human Health, and the Environment” followed by a discussion and Q&A session moderated by Lois Sechrist. Course 3 dives deeper into the relationship between building materials and human health. You’ll discover the three ways substances move from the environment into our bodies. You’ll also learn about health risks—what makes certain populations more vulnerable and why health impacts can vary from person to person. Embracing the precautionary principle is one of several actions explored in this course to help you better consider human health risks when selecting materials.
 | Lois Sechrist, LEED AP, is a Manager of Sustainability for Medxcel. She works with Green Teams at 139 hospitals in 19 states. After 15 years in health care sustainability, she has extensive experience with healthy food, waste management, community impact, sustainable purchasing, energy, water, and facility resiliency. Lois holds a Bachelor of Interior Architecture degree, magna cum laude, from Kansas State University and a Harvard Executive Education in Sustainability Leadership program certificate. She is a LEED Accredited Professional, taught the LEED Green Associate exam preparation course for several years and is past chair of the University City (MO) Green Practices Commission. |
About the Materials Certificate Program: Material selection is a core service provided by architects, but that process is far from simple. The Materials Certificate Program untangles the complexities of that process in five essential courses. The key? Materials transparency. When you know everything you can about the materials you use, you’re able to make the best product decisions for projects, people, and the environment. The courses cover different types of impacts, and best practices for reducing these impacts, from industry-best instructors. Each course will be followed by a Q&A session moderated by local and national experts. Each course is worth (1) LU/HSW credit. Take all five courses and earn a certificate! All courses are free of charge, courtesy of our series sponsor, CaraGreen - Home - CaraGreen.
