Flood Plain Development – Planning, Policy and Science 
Moderated by: Charles Bell, AIA - Charles E. Bell Architects, Inc. Overview: This Continuing Education Course provides an overview of the numerous urban planning, site planning, and building design issues to be addressed when considering the development of building projects in or near flood prone areas. The course will provide attendees with an orientation to, and definitions of various terms used in the planning, regulatory approval, design, construction, and occupancy of buildings and other occupiable structures located in flood prone areas. Specific topics include: - Governmental authority with jurisdiction over flood plain development, National Flood Insurance Program and related issues
- The impact and influence of geography, topography, seasonal and climatic weather expectations and history, case studies of generalized and flash flooding
- Public policy and practices regarding approval or denial of developments in flood prone areas
- Proven and potential strategies to prevent or mitigate the effects of developments proposed for flood plains
