Reactivating Historic Industrial Buildings for Life Sciences: Health, Safety, and Welfare Strategies for Adaptive Reuse Laboratories

This course examines the adaptive reuse of an existing historic factory building into a new life sciences laboratory and support office workplace through an in-person walking tour of the building. Through the lens of health, safety, and welfare, the tour explores how architects evaluate existing industrial buildings, reconcile historic fabric with current codes, integrate laboratory infrastructure, and design safe, accessible, resilient, and high-performing environments for occupants and the surrounding community.

Topics include existing-building assessment, life safety and egress, fire protection, hazardous materials and laboratory support systems, accessibility upgrades, structural and envelope rehabilitation, indoor environmental quality, sustainability, and strategies for balancing preservation objectives with contemporary laboratory performance requirements.
