AIASTL will host a Chapter Members-only meeting at Powell Hall in St. Louis’ Midtown arts district. Constructed in 1925, the imposing edifice was originally designed in the French Baroque style by Charles and George Rapp of Chicago, an American architectural firm famed for the design of movie palaces around the country, including the locally renowned and lavish Ambassador Theatre in downtown St. Louis demolished in 1997.  AIA members will have the opportunity to inspect in-progress construction of renovations and the 65,000 square-foot expansion.  Tour guides will explain to chapter members in attendance how the collection of new public spaces will work in concert with a new lobby and back-of-house expansion to provide universal accessibility to the public as well as educational facilities and improved musician and back-stage spaces. Program attendees will experience first-hand the spatial language of historic concert halls, as exhibited by a new entry shaped as a series of canted shells inspired by the building’s musical nature and program.
