Schedule: 11:30 AM - Lunch and reception 12:00 - 1:00 PM - Program Speaker: Esley Hamilton, Honorary AIA Program Topic: Eliel Saarinen, the father of Eero Saarinen Summary: Like other modernists, Eliel Saarinen left a successful practice in Europe (Finland in his case) to build a new career in the U.S.that combined design with teaching. His buildings here were remarkably influential, particularly his church and school designs. His reputation was even enhanced by competitions he lost, notably his Tribune Tower for Chicago and his Smithsonian Gallery of Art for Washington, DC. His work at Cranbrook outside Detroit not only produced an ensemble of outstanding buildings but a new generation of architects and designers who brought his brand of modernism into the mid century.
