Overview:

The Grove is a St. Louis, MO neighborhood that has seen tremendous transformation in the last two decades. A once undesirable, crime-ridden area has quickly transformed into a thriving community. There are many reasons for this transformation, but JEMA will center on providing a brief history of the area and then focus on some of recent urban design and renewal efforts that include the integration of 6 separate and different multi-family buildings located throughout the neighborhood. Description of the process, community involvement and strategy to improve the overall neighborhood while mitigating the negative effects of gentrification will be a primary focus.

Cortex is a 200-acre overlay district in St. Louis, MO that was formerly an under-utilized post-industrial area between a thriving historic commercial and residential district to the north (the Central West End) and The Grove to the south. Cortex was conceived and advanced by education and institutional leaders to stem the brain drain of advanced degree and PhD educated graduates as well as intellectual capital and commercialization-ready research, with the intent to create an innovation infrastructure that would retain this intellectual capital, attract venture capital, and create an engine for life/ag-science and technology employment from the lowest to the highest levels. The success of Cortex has spurred the birth of additional centers of innovation around the city. With the impact of the recent pandemic and the past experiences of “shell-game-development” in the St. Louis region, how/can the continued success of Cortex, The Grove, the Central West End as well as these newly emerging innovation nodes be guaranteed?
